On Monday 19th May 2020, Chancellor Merkel and President Macron announced a joint proposal for a 500 billion euro common fund, to be financed by allowing the European Commission to borrow from the money markets. The fund will, according to the Merkel-Macron proposal, finance directly businesses across the EU – by means mainly of transfers. Is this a breakthrough? Here is my answer on behalf of DiEM25.

Ακόμα κι όταν ο κορωνοϊός θα έχει νικηθεί, το νέο χρέος που θα έχει αφήσει στο διάβα του θα βαραίνει για χρόνια την υφήλιο δηλητηριάζοντας τις δημοκρατίες μας και συνεισφέροντας στην οικοδόμηση ενός κόσμου λιγότερο ανοικτού, φτωχότερου, γεμάτου τείχη και μισαλλοδοξία. Το υφεσιακό κύμα που έφερε η πανδημία βρήκε την παγκόσμια οικονομία ήδη ευάλωτη. Υστερα από μία δεκαετία «εύκολου» χρήματος που οδήγησε στην υπερχρέωση μεγάλες επιχειρήσεις στις προηγμένες χώρες και τις κυβερνήσεις των πιο αδύναμων κρατών, ο κορωνοϊός ήταν η ακίδα που όλοι φοβόμασταν ότι θα σκάσει την παγκόσμια φούσκα χρέους.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) in a Wednesday letter addressed to Georgieva and David Malpass, president of the World Bank, called on international financial organizations to consider “extensive debt forgiveness” for more than 70 of the world’s poorest countries. The letter, which also called for significant fiscal stimulus to help stabilize the global economy, was signed by more than 300 lawmakers from over two dozen countries, including former Argentine president Carlos Menem, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis and Sen. Πώς κρίνετε την υγειονομική διαχείριση της κρίσης από την κυβέρνηση; Θεωρείτε πως βιάστηκε να άρει τα μέτρα;
Η κυβέρνηση είχε δύο υποχρεώσεις.
Πρώτον, να επενδύσει στο αποψιλωμένο ΕΣΥ, προσλαμβάνοντας χιλιάδες γιατρούς και νοσηλευτές, και εξοπλίζοντάς τους με τα απαραίτητα μέσα. Δεν το έκανε. Για την ακρίβεια, η Ελλάδα ήταν ουραγός της Ευρώπης όσον αφορά τις επί πλέον δαπάνες για την υγεία.

Το φάντασμα του 5ου Μνημονίου πλανάται ήδη πάνω από τη χώρα. Ας δούμε γιατί είναι αναπόφευκτο, εκτός κι αν μια Πολιτική Επανάσταση το αποτρέψει πριν από τα μέσα του 2021.
Πριν από δέκα χρόνια, για να διασώσουν τις γαλλογερμανικές τράπεζες, προσποιήθηκαν ότι το κράτος μας δεν χρεοκόπησε, ώστε να μπορέσουν να στείλουν 100 δισ. ευρώ των Ευρωπαίων φορολογούμενων στις εν λόγω τράπεζες μέσω της… πλατείας Συντάγματος.
Ο όρος που έθεσαν οι βουλευτές της κ. Μέρκελ για να συναινέσουν σε αυτή την κυνική μεταβίβαση τραπεζικών ζημιών ήταν η εξοντωτική λιτότητα για τους Ελληνες σε συνδυασμό με πλιάτσικο της δημόσιας και ιδιωτικής τους περιουσίας (π.χ. 14 αεροδρόμια τότε, αρπακτικά Ταμεία σήμερα).

DiEM25 was created in February 2016 because Europe was disintegrating as a result of a pseudo-technocratic takeover of the EU that was imposing austerity everywhere in response to the financial crisis caused by the EU pseudo-technocracy’s controllers. Today, now that a mindless virus has placed European capitalism in suspended animation, it is time to re-assess our analysis and to re-purpose our policies.
Our 2016 Manifesto offered a pertinent analysis of why Europe was disintegrating, why the xenophobic Nationalist International was rising, how the nationalists and the EU technocracy were, essentially, the opposite sides of the same coin. Σήμερα, Πέμπτη 23η Απριλίου, συγκαλείται Σύνοδος Κορυφής με θέμα την κοινή, ευρωπαϊκή αντιμετώπιση της Νέας Μεγάλης Ύφεσης. Ένα θα έπρεπε να είναι το ζητούμενο για τους ηγέτες της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης σήμερα: Το νέο χρέος που προκαλεί η πανδημία να μην βαρύνει τους προϋπολογισμούς των κρατών μας, καθώς αυτό θα φέρει κούρεμα μισθών και συντάξεων, νέους φόρους – δηλαδή επανάληψη της γνωστής στο λαό μας, από το 2010, μνημονιακής λαίλαπας.
Δυστυχώς, καθώς την 9η Απριλίου το Eurogroup έδωσε την χαριστική βολή στην κοινή, ευρωπαϊκή λύση (στο ευρωομόλογο), σήμερα, το ζητούμενο της Συνόδου Κορυφής θα είναι άλλο: Πως θα προσποιηθούν ότι δρομολογούν την κοινή, ευρωπαϊκή αντιμετώπιση

Later today, Thursday 23rd April, the EU Council will meet to discuss the common European response to the Great New Recession caused by the pandemic. Their agenda should comprise one, and only one, item: How to ensure that the necessary increase in public deficits will not show up in the fiscally stressed member-states’ national budgets, so as not to boost already non-viable public debt levels. If the EU Council fails in this task, the result will be massive, cruel austerity (e.g. pension and wage cuts, new taxes etc.) for the Europeans worst hit by the pandemic.
Tragically, since the 9th April Eurogroup already killed off the necessary common, European response (i.e. Eurobonds), today, the true purpose of the

Free market capitalism died over a 100 years ago and gave way to monopoly capitalism. Monopoly capitalism is now not even able to reproduce itself, let alone sustain the planet, common decency etc. But what comes next?
