Democracy or Oligarchy: A comment on Yanis Varoufakis’ statement

Summary:
Yanis Varoufakis stated on Euronews Albania that Balkan countries live not in democracies but oligarchies. As I explained afterwards, his statement builds on a large body of non-partisan research that sees political institutions as the fundamental driver of long-term growth. Unfortunately, his statement is also correct, in that Balkan political systems have the outward appearance of a democracy, yet fail to truly provide citizens with access to decision-making. The recent debates on electoral reform in Albania are the most recent, clear, evidence of that. #growth #development #politicalinstitutions #electoralreform
