Few modern day economists have captured the imagination in the manner in which Thomas Piketty has with his seminal work on inequality ‘Capital In The 21st Century’. Last week Oxfam released its report on global inequality which found how just 62 individuals owned as much as three and a half billion people or the bottom 50%. And perhaps for the first time the issue of inequality is not just being seen through the prism of morality. Economists from Raghuram Rajan to IMF’s Christine Laggarde are now arguing that such inequalities is also hurting economic growth in the long-run. Thomas Piketty speaks to CNBC-TV18 about the threats to inequality for India and rest of the world at a time when aggregate demand is expected to remain muted.


Thomas Piketty
Thomas Piketty (7 May 1971) is a French economist who works on wealth and income inequality. He is a professor (directeur d'études) at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), associate chair at the Paris School of Economics and Centennial professor at the London School of Economics new International Inequalities Institute.
