World-renowned French economist, academic, researcher, author, columnist and public intellectual, Professor Thomas Piketty on Friday night accepted an honorary doctoral degree in Economics from the University of Johannesburg. The University’s Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences conferred the honorary doctoral degree on Prof Piketty, in acknowledgment of his contributions to knowledge concerning issues of inequality and poverty. Prof Piketty will also deliver the 13th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, which is hosted by UJ in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Thomas Piketty (7 May 1971) is a French economist who works on wealth and income inequality. He is a professor (directeur d'études) at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), associate chair at the Paris School of Economics and Centennial professor at the London School of Economics new International Inequalities Institute.
