He discussed some very fascinating topical issues including "Resilience at the Brink", the state of the European Union, Brexit negotiations, the political landscape globally moving forward, the risk of the 2020's being a lost decade and threats to democracy. Widely known internationally as a leading, outspoken and much-discussed figure in the renegotiations of Greece's debt with its creditors during the 2015 government debt crisis, he has been recognised for his thought leadership on international affairs and economic policy since then. In 2018 he launched MeRA25, which is a fast growing left wing political party in Greece and that same year Varoufakis started The Progressive International, a worldwide organisation uniting left-wing activists and organisations, alongside United States Senator & ex-Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders. Brought to you by The Oxford Guild, its Collegium Global Network of top universities, Cambridge Guild, LSESU BIG, Imperial Finance Society, King's Business Club, Warwick Finance Societies and other leading university societies, the event is 100% free and open to all and supported by The Oxford Foundry. Varoufakis is the author of several books on the European debt crisis, the financial imbalance in the world and game theory. He is also a highly recognised speaker and often appears as an analyst for national news media. His latest works including ‘Adults in the Room: My Battle with Europe's Deep Establishment’ and ‘Talking to My Daughter About the Economy’. Yanis Varoufakis describes himself as a ‘libertarian Marxist,’ although, he says, "It is not something that I volunteer to talk about much, because the very mention of Marx switches audiences off." He teaches economic theory at the University of Athens, where he challenges mainstream notions -- arguing that after the financial crash of 2008 we need a radically new way of thinking about the economy, finance and capitalism. Varoufakis is an international leader of the progressive movement and has dedicated his life to pushing for a better connected, more compassionate world. At a time of such great difficulty worldwide his insight is particularly important and we are excited to have hosted him again and let you all hear what he had to say and ask your questions.
