...to be sure, the CIA is all set to make a hyper-aggressive opening move on the Russian chessboard — the Danish Gambit! In the game of chess, the Danish opening usually lasts less than 20 moves as white will either breakthrough and checkmate the king early on or white will fail miserably and be left in shambles. This is not for the faint of heart.
Russia is addressing this as a distraction from the revolution at home in the US. It is that but much more than that, too, as MKB observes. The press against the "illiberal" powers is on in an effort to secure permanent global hegemony for the West, planned from before the end of WWII, when it was clear that the Allies would win. (Actually, this all began well before WWI.) Now it is coming to a head as Western adversaries gain economic and military power that threatens Western (US) "dominance" (the US uses that term to characterize policy).

"May you live in interesting times."
