I saw the white house's diplomatic readout. It's more or less the US, like Euro NATO allies, is going to wash its hands if anything goes down. There is no commitment to military intervention, and I quote from the white house readout of the meeting: "President Biden voiced the deep concerns of the United States and our European Allies about Russia’s escalation of forces surrounding Ukraine and made clear that the U.S. and our Allies would respond with strong economic and other measures in the event of military escalation."
The escalation all year has been almost entirely instigated by the Kiev government, as Zelensky is facing internal pressure by supporters of the previous president and saw the idea of becoming a war president as a way to shore up his flagging approval ratings. It worked briefly but now he's down in the 20s as troops are sitting in trenches freezing their asses off knowing if anything were to pop off the Russians would intervene. Zelensky f'd himself. He doesn't want to go forward, but if he backs down the rabid dogs in his own govt will tear him apart. Western Europe and the US have made it clear they will not die for Ukraine.
You may have seen back in September, one of Zelensky's advisors was ambushed in an attempted assassination. The guy was his former TV producer, so make no mistake about it Zelensky represents an oligarch faction just like everyone else, even as he's trying to brand an anti-oligarch corruption cleanup initiative. Zelensky himself was heavily implicated in the Pandora Papers.
There's a decent chance Zelensky doesn't walk out of the president's office.
