A much anticipated visit to South Africa by one of the most talked about economists in the world has fallen flat. French Professor, Thomas Piketty, missed his flight to South Africa last night. The Nelson Mandela Foundation has confirmed he did not have the required amount of free pages in his passport, but is working on attaining an emergency passport. He was due to take part in various events in the run up to the 13th Annual Nelson Mandela lecture on Saturday. It was hoped he would be able to still present a scheduled lecture at the University of Cape Town today. But technical problems meant he could not be heard on the satellite connection and student protests disrupted the introduction.

Thomas Piketty (7 May 1971) is a French economist who works on wealth and income inequality. He is a professor (directeur d'études) at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), associate chair at the Paris School of Economics and Centennial professor at the London School of Economics new International Inequalities Institute.
