Famous French economist, Thomas Piketty, says the extreme levels of inequality in South Africa are bad for economic growth. Piketty has arrived in the country to present the 13th Annual Nelson Mandela lecture on Saturday. He is the author of Capital in the 21st Century which examines trends around inequality and warns that governments need to intervene or the rich will continue to get richer.


It became a global phenomenon after being translated into English last year.

Thomas Piketty
Thomas Piketty (7 May 1971) is a French economist who works on wealth and income inequality. He is a professor (directeur d'études) at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), associate chair at the Paris School of Economics and Centennial professor at the London School of Economics new International Inequalities Institute.
