I made my two best friends at school. The friendships I made as a boy were extremely powerful, and when I look back on them now I can see how in many ways it was like being in love.

I was devastated when my both best friends moved far away from me at about roughly the same time to other parts of the country when I was in my early 30's - which were career moves and for cheaper houses - but my girlfriend at the time remained a best friend, although girlfriend relationships are different. I see my best friends once or twice year now, although we did lose contact for a while.

I still see old school friends occasionally, but although they were great friendships once they are not the same as my very best friends. They've changed and I've changed.

Sadly, this article says that we only make our best friends up until the age of 30, and then after that it's becomes unlikely you will ever do so again.

I have two work colleague friends who I have known since the age of 28 and we go out and do things together but they are not as close as my very best friends, and I'm often a little guarded about my deepest inner feelings.

I watched a great British film called Northern Soul a little while back with my girlfriend which was about the relationship of two teenage boys. It reminded me of the poverful friendshisps I once had, and I felt a bit sad, but my girlfriend was very moved by it too - we both felt it. It was a good film about youth and close friendships.
