The new UN report on deaths in Gaza makes for Grim Reading. According to the admirable work of UN data sleuths, details close to 10.000 of the official 40.000+ deaths have been added. These are only the direct victims; indirect victims (starvation, stress, sickness) are omitted. One of the findings is that, unlike during earlier periods of war in Gaza, killing is indiscriminate. Many of the victims were women and children (graphs). The youngest victim was one day old, and the oldest was 97 years old. ´Völkermord´, to use the German word for genocide. Graph 1 and 2 and 3. At the same time, the destruction is, according to the report, ´discriminate´ and targeted at wiping out families and civil society. At the same time, starvation is used as a weapon of mass destruction. The study corroborates an earlier blog on this site (look here), which stated, in June, that at least15.000 additional deaths have to be added to the total number of war-related deaths, as well as an article in The Lancet, which stated that the death toll must be at least 186.000. But that was months ago. At this moment, a death toll of 300.000 is, using the methods of the blog and the article, conceivable. Unless maximum pressure is put upon the Israeli government, I expect the death toll to rise to two million. Just think about the latest news. A house in Gaza was demolished, leading to 33 deaths in this attack alone. The first parts of Gaza are already being annexed by Israel.
Aside from this, the backlash in countries like the USA against organisations like the UN is, of course, related to these kinds of reports that threaten hegemonic structures. Think about it.
