August 26, 2023, Letters from an American, Professor Heather Cox-Richardson On this date in 1920, the U.S. Secretary of State received the official notification from the governor of Tennessee that his state had ratified the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Tennessee was the 36th state to ratify the amendment, and the last one necessary to make the amendment the law of the land once the secretary of state certified it. He did that as soon...

Limits on pickup truck and SUV size and weight

This is interesting stuff. Big, loud, and gas guzzlers. Licensing them according to such could go a long when in shutting down the purchase of them. Many of these trucks are platforms to conduct business out of them. No licenses for such. Neither do hey have the business name, phone number, and name. Technology for the pick-me-up trucks they have added an 1800-2000 pound battery. The pickup trucks are up around 10,000 pounds. Spent much time...

Battle of the Cultures in Getting the Job Done

Two completely different cultures trying to understand one another. I have worked for Japanese, Korean, and German management. How the Japanese and Koreans addressed me was far different than how they address the workers of their descent. The Germans were far more open than the other two cultures. Overhead Costs; TSMC may not be burdened by the same overhead costs which are included in US Labor’s pay. This is one reason they may wish to bring...

Open Thread August 23, 2013 – Starting Aug. 1, the sale of energy inefficient lightbulbs was banned in the US.

A minimum standard for lightbulbs has been set at 45 lumens (brightness) per watt. Most traditional incandescent and halogen lightbulbs won’t make the cut. Switching over from older lightbulbs to newer LED bulbs will “conserve energy and help consumers save on their energy bills.” This according to the rule announced in April last year. Changing Energy Costs, Angry Bear ...

Science Fiction, The Feeling of Power, and Where are the Holes?

Science Fiction When I was growing up, there as not a time when I did not have a book in my hands and reading. One of my favs was science fiction, another was the Civil War, and then the classics. I stumbled upon a short story about futuristic fighter pilots. The issue to the story being it was an even battle between to waring nations. No one could gain the upper hand as computers determined the tactics only to be countered by other computers. One...

A Randomized Clinical Trial, Clinical Pharmacy, and Pharmacology

Will a high dose of Ivermectin for 6 Days impact Covid? As a biochemist, I find the argument of a lack of mechanism for Ivermectin as a justification for prescribing it for COVID particularly pernicious. While it is correct to say that we didn’t know the mechanism for aspirin for decades after we knew it worked (one could say the same about the smoking and lung cancer), that’s not a logical basis for prescribing a drug. The gold standard is a...

Is Angry Bear Noticed by Others?

If you did not know, now you do know. Just like our fellow blogs, Angry Bear posts have been recorded in the Library of Congress. I could not get in tonight to see which posts ere and like I have other times. Something to think about for at least one cup of coffee. Much of this occurred over Dan’s watch. The Convenience Industrial Scam called Recycling

I have known of Lloyd for over a decade and have read his commentary a number of times when he was writing at Treehugger. A parting of the ways came about for Lloyd and other Treehugger writers. Lloyd has his own substack and is presenting his views on recycling, conservation of resources, etc. It is a good read. Lloyd discusses the shift of responsibility for product, packaging, use, and delivery from industry to consumers. Has recycling...
