SATURDAY 28TH JANUARY 2017, 10.00am at CONWAY HALL 2016 was the year of Brexit – the year when the EU referendum exposed deep divisions in Britain’s establishment, but also in its working classes. 2016 was the year passion returned to British politics with ‘outsiders’ challenging Britain’s establishment both from the right (with UKIP dictating a xenophobic pro-Brexit agenda) and the left (with Jeremy Corbyn’s remarkable rise to the leadership of the Labour Party). 2017 will be the year when the challenge of the establishment that 2016 brought to bear will either lead to a revitalisation of progressive politics in the UK or will see the country slide into the morass of xenophobic Little Englandism.
