The Looming War Against China

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Economic Logic has been Replaced by National Security Overrides The July NATO summit in Vilnius had the feeling of a funeral, as if they had just lost a family member – Ukraine. To clear away NATO’s failure to drive Russia out of Ukraine and move NATO right up to the Russian border, its members tried Continue Reading The post The Looming War Against China first appeared on Michael Hudson.

How long until the historically tight jobs market reverts to trend?

How long until the historically tight jobs market reverts to trend?  – by New Deal democrat There are some very unusual cross-currents going on in the housing sector, revealed by yesterday’s existing home sales report. But it will take some time-intensive organization to present it to you, so I’m saving it for (hopefully) Monday. In the meantime, let’s take another look at the job market and how it compares with consumer spending. One of...

TSMC delays Arizona plant because of US skilled worker shortage?

If you really what it to end bring Taiwanese workers to the US, demand TMSC give them US benefits. However, there is no reason to bring that many Taiwanese workers to the US. The impact of which will be felt a year or two later when they are still in the US. From reading this, the plant to be built and is behind schedule will make 4 nanometer chips. The later US plant will build three nanometer chips. The Taiwanese are already in R&D on 2...

On the art of reading and writing

On the art of reading and writing How should one approach reading? It’s probably a common pondering that everyone has had at some point about our attitude towards literature and reading. I myself find reason to contemplate this when my beloved — who tirelessly devours new books at a rapid pace — once again tries to persuade me to put back August Strindberg’s Röda rummet, Hjalmar Söderberg’s Martin Bircks ungdom or Selma Lagerlöf’s Gösta Berlings saga in the...

Open Thread July 22, 2023 Can Justices be Influenced?

Senate Democrats are not having fun these days unless they’re attacking a conservative Supreme Court Justice. Thursday’s markup of their judicial “ethics” bill was the event of the season. Leading the charge was Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse claiming the High Court is “captured by special interests.” Mr. Whitehouse brought up “freebie vacations.” He also criticized the Justices for receiving friend-of-the-court briefs from what he called...

Ron DeSantis doesn’t understand capitalism

I see where failing GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is trying to salvage his campaign by pivoting to Marxism. He is calling for the state of Florida to investigate Belgium-based AB InBev on the basis of their recent Bud Light advertisements using a trans character. DeSantis seems to believe that AB InBev breached legal duties to shareholders and that as governor of Florida, “all options are on the table.” Ostensibly, the basis for the nanny...
